Voyage of the Space Beagle

Macmillan has reissued A.E. van Vogt's 1950 space opera, The Voyage of the Space Beagle. Now readers of this blog almost certainly understand the reference in the title. Apparently, that's not common knowledge, however, since in a review of the book for the August 2008 issue of Interzone David Mathew commented:
“The very title…is falsely cute, especially if it brings to mind a scampering puppy…”
Obviously Mathew isn't up on his biology history!

It's particularly surprising given that Interzone is a British publication. I thought the HMS Beagle Project had been given a fair amount of publicity there.

In Garret Hardin's "Voyage of the Spaceship Beagle", the spaceship was named for the US president's dog.
